Fires are classified by letters, except E, which is Electrical. Let’s take a look at each type of fire and which fire extinguisher works best for it.

Class A

These are the most common types of fire. They include any fire that uses wood, paper, textiles, or other common, solid combustibles. These may occur in a residential building or a business. To fight a Class A fire, you can use water, or a foam fire extinguisher.

Class B

If the fire involves flammable liquids, it falls under this class. Flammable liquids include petrol and diesel, of course, but can also involve oil, alcohol, paint, and other liquids. A foam fire extinguisher is usually the best choice for these.

Class C

Fires involving gases that are flammable or combustible are under Class C. Propane, natural gas, and methane are all possibilities for this type of fire. Class D

Classes of fire

● Class A - fires involving organic solids like paper, wood, fabrics etc

The crucial role that fire wardens play in making sure your business is prepared for any kind of fire emergency is of utmost importance and should not be underestimated. ● Ensure everyone is able to leave the building using all the appropriate routes and exits (this excludes lifts)

● Assess all accessible spaces in the area, including bathrooms, to make sure everyone has evacuated – this should be carried out on your way out of the building so that the fire warden is not putting themselves at risk by re-entering the evacuated area

● Shut the doors to help to isolate any fire

● Guide everyone out to the assembly area and offer assistance in checking that everyone has arrived safely

According to recent statistics , of the 37,000 fires that occur each year in the UK, 200 of these claim lives. The most common time for a fire to occur is between 10 pm and 6 am - many people don’t realise that when you are asleep your sense of smell decreases to an almost non-existent state. With this in mind, it’s imperative that homeowners are aware of the common causes of fires, so they can take extra precautions in the home.

To reduce the risk of house fires, smoking should be limited within the house especially in bedrooms. However, if you do decide to smoke inside, use large deep ashtrays to prevent cigarettes from falling out, and supervise smokers that are simultaneously drinking alcohol, may become drowsy, and therefore, forget to extinguish their cigarette properly.

Curious children

Any item that can cause a fire should always be properly monitored when children are around, as well as putting lighters and matches in hard to reach places. In most cases, when children cause fires, this is done unintentionally or out of curiosity when playing with these items.
